Extreme Weather Claims Lives Of Nine Trekkers From Karnataka In Uttarakhand

Nine trekkers from Karnataka tragically lost their lives in Uttarakhand due to extreme weather conditions. A 22-member team, organized by Himalayan View Trekking Agency, had embarked on a trek from Uttarkashi on May 29. Rescue operations, including local and Indian Air Force helicopters, were launched as severe weather stranded the group.

Officials reported that nine trekkers from Karnataka succumbed to extreme weather conditions in Uttarakhand.

A 22-member trekking team, organized by Himalayan View Trekking Agency, Maneri, embarked on a 35-km trek from Uttarkashi on May 29. The group comprised 18 trekkers from Karnataka, one from Maharashtra, and three local guides, according to Uttarkashi District Magistrate Meharban Singh Bisht.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah directed officials on Wednesday to facilitate the safe rescue of remaining trekkers and expedite the repatriation of the deceased to Karnataka.

Earlier today, Rashmi Mahesh, Principal Secretary in the Revenue Department, informed PTI that four trekkers from Karnataka had perished, with rescue efforts ongoing for those stranded at Sahasratal in Uttarakhand. The Garhwal District Magistrate oversaw the rescue operation.

Subsequently, the death toll increased to nine. Meanwhile, Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda departed for Dehradun to oversee and facilitate the rescue efforts.

In a statement issued by his office, the minister revealed that a group of trekkers from Karnataka commenced their trek on Tuesday morning in the high-altitude region of Shastratal Mayali, Uttarakhand. Upon reaching their destination, adverse weather conditions led to their stranded status during their return journey.

‘Last night, we received reports of trekkers from Karnataka facing danger due to severe weather conditions. Upon learning of the situation, we promptly contacted the Uttarakhand government, Mountaineering Federation of India, and the Home Department of the Central Government through the district administration. With their assistance, rescue efforts are underway,’ he stated.

Gowda stated that emergency rescue operations commenced on Tuesday evening, utilizing locally available helicopters. Additionally, an Indian Air Force helicopter arrived in Uttarkashi at 9 am on Wednesday to assist in the trekkers’ rescue. A disaster management team began its journey towards the camp via land route this morning.
