Due to heavy rains, this time too, there was a 10 to 20 kilometer long traffic jam on the city’s highways and internal roads. Due to waterlogging, many vehicles stopped midway and people were stranded for hours.

Broken Promises: Repeated Government Assurances Fail

The government assures every year that there will be no waterlogging in the monsoon this time, but the reality repeatedly exposes the truth of these promises.

In July 2016, there was such a traffic jam in Gurugram that people who left the office in the evening could not reach home till midnight. After this, the government spent a huge budget to improve the drainage and sewerage system, built underpasses and flyovers, but the result is not yet visible.

According to media report, the work of laying a 26 km long drainage line was started in 2010, the cost of which was initially fixed at Rs 294 crore and later increased to Rs 400 crore. Despite this, till date 3 km of work is incomplete.

Geographical Challenges Add To The Woes

The geographical location of Gurugram is also a big reason for its problems. Rain water flows from the Aravali hills towards the city, due to which the sewage system gets jammed. During monsoon, the amount of water increases so much that the sewage is unable to bear its weight and all the water spills on the roads.

Experts believe that during the British era, there were many ponds, lakes, ghats and drainage channels in Gurugram, which used to absorb the mountain water. But as urbanization increased, all these systems started disappearing.

Residential colonies and societies built by ignoring the geographical position of the city are also a major reason for waterlogging. The old natural drainage system has now been replaced by concrete structures, due to which rainwater cannot drain out.
