The Election Commission of India (ECI), prioritising the integrity and transparency of the electoral process, has taken a significant decision. The Commission has issued instructions to hold open meetings again at all polling stations as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign of the electoral rolls. The objective is to make the voter list completely error-free and maintain public trust.
Open meetings in Mathura, BLOs to read out voter lists
In compliance with this directive, earlier, open meetings were held at every polling station in Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh on December 6 and 7. Now, these special meetings will be organised again at each polling station. The Booth Level Officer (BLO) will play a crucial role in this process. The BLO will read out the current voter list in the presence of local prominent citizens, village heads, councilors, and polling agents or representatives of political parties. This process will be conducted publicly to eliminate any possibility of irregularities or bias. Voter lists often include the names of deceased individuals or those who have moved away, which increases the risk of fraudulent voting. Through these open meetings, such names will be identified and removed from the list.
There are approximately four lakh voters in Mathura who fall under this category. In addition, the process of adding eligible citizens, who have not yet been included in the list will be carried out simultaneously. Applications will also be accepted to correct any errors in names, ages, or addresses. The administration has put all its efforts into making this campaign a success.
All supervisors and Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been given clear instructions to take all claims and objections received from the public seriously. These applications must be processed within a stipulated timeframe. The public has also been appealed to participate actively in these meetings and cooperate with the administration in rectifying the voter list. While the district administration has not yet set a specific timeframe for the open meetings, it has been decided that these meetings will be held during the last two or three days of the voter registration form filling period.
