As the holy festival of Eid al-Adha approaches, the streets of Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar and other towns in the Kashmir Valley are bustling with activity. Despite a subdued atmosphere in the markets, locals are gearing up for the celebrations with essential shopping.

The traditional fervor of high-pitch buying and selling has been notably absent this year, with sacrificial animal markets in the Eidgah area of Srinagar and beyond experiencing low-key business activity. However, essential items such as bakery goods, poultry, vegetables, garments, toys, and firecrackers are in high demand as people prepare for the upcoming Eid festivities on Monday.

The increased traffic movement on the streets and highways indicates a surge in locals purchasing necessities to celebrate the holy festival. Eid-ul-Azha holds great significance for Muslims worldwide, symbolizing the historical sacrifice made by Prophet Abrahim.

While haggling between buyers and sellers is prevalent in the animal markets, some traders express concerns about not receiving adequate returns for their efforts. Despite the subdued market activity, bakery shops continue to thrive, catering to the demand for traditional Eid treats.

Although some sectors like electronics and appliances report a lack of buyers despite offering discounts, bakery items remain a staple purchase for many families. The influx of tourists in Kashmir has injected money into the local economy, yet challenges persist in ensuring widespread circulation of funds.

Market-checking squads have been deployed to prevent overcharging by unscrupulous traders, ensuring a fair shopping experience for consumers. Special Eid prayers will be held at mosques and Eidgahs across the region, with authorities ensuring sanitation, security, and healthcare arrangements.

Amidst the prevailing peace in the Valley, Kashmiris are embracing the festive spirit of Eid-ul-Azha, appreciating the tranquility after years of turmoil. Despite the subdued shopping trends, the essence of Eid celebrations remains vibrant in Kashmir, reflecting the resilience and unity of its people.
