The Election Commission of India (ECI) has sought the video footage of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee allegedly threatening the State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), if sources are to be believed.
According to a report published by NDTV, Mamata Banerjee had allegedly threatened to disclose “corruption allegations” against CEO Manoj Agarwal, stating that he would face action if he overstepped his limits. She also accused him of threatening state officials at the event, which was attended by the Chief Secretary and Minister Aroop Biswas.
Sources told NDTV that the poll body has sought video footage of Mamata Banerjee’s remarks and translation from the CEO’s office.
On October 9, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed concerns about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in a press conference, alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is using these mechanisms to manipulate voter lists and target citizens.
Banerjee claimed that the BJP is using SIR as a pretext to implement NRC and remove names from the voter list.
“In the name of SIR, they are trying to place NRC, want to remove names from the voter list, I assure you no genuine voter will be unlisted,” Mamata said.
She warned the BJP against escalating tensions through their policies, accusing them of provocative actions, saying, “I warned the BJP, don’t play with fire.”
Bharatiya Janata Party National Spokesperson and MP Sambit Patra accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of allegedly threatening riots following the SIR exercise on October 10.
In a video posted on X, Patra alleged that the Chief Minister Banerjee stated that if SIR is conducted in the eastern state, riots will break out in Bengal and there will be horrifying consequences.
“Mamata Banerjee said that if SIR is done, riots will break out in Bengal and there will be horrifying consequences…The rioting will be done by you, because it is your government which is in power there, and it is your Police there. Mamata Banerjee you are issuing threats..,” said Patra.
