EC Deferrs Counting For Mizoram Assembly Polls To December 4

The counting of the assembly elections 2023 of Mizoram was deferred by one day- December 4.

In response to multiple appeals from different segments, the Election Commission of India on Friday modified the counting date for the Mizoram Legislative Assembly General Election.

The initial counting date, scheduled for December 3, 2023 (Sunday), has been revised to December 4, 2023 (Monday).

Addressing the media, Election Commission of India said, “The Election Commission of India had announced the schedule for General Election to the Legislative Assemblies of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Telangana vide Press Note No. JEC.l/PN/57/2023 dated 9th October,2023.”

“In the said Press Note the date of counting for all these elections was fixed on 3rdDecember, 2023 (Sunday). The Commission has received several representations from various quarters requesting for change in date of counting from 3rd December, 2023 (Sunday) to some other week day, on the ground that 3rd December, 2023 being Sunday a special significance for the people of Mizoram”, It stated.

“The Commission, having considered these representations, has decided to revise the date of counting for the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Mizoram from 3rd December, 2023 (Sunday) to 4th December, 2023 (Monday). No change has been made in any event of schedule of General Election to Legislative Assembly of Mizoram or some other state,” ECI further added.

Taking the matter X (formerly Twitter), ECI said, “The decision comes following numerous requests from various sectors, advocating for a change in the counting date from December 3, 2023 (Sunday) to a different weekday. The basis for this alteration was the significance of December 3, 2023, a Sunday, which holds special importance for the people of Mizoram.”
