EaseMyTrip Suspends All Maldives Flight Bookings Amid India-Maldives Row, Starts #ChaloLakshadweep Campaign

Amidst the ongoing tension between India and the Maldives, the hashtag #BoycottMaldives gained popularity on social media

In response to derogatory remarks made by certain suspended ministers against India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to Lakshadweep, EaseMyTrip has taken a notable step amid the online campaign boycotting Maldives. The travel platform has decided to suspend all flight bookings to the Maldives. This move reflects the company’s stance against the offensive comments and its commitment to addressing the concerns raised by the online community.

Expressing solidarity with India, Nishant Pitti, co-founder and CEO of the Indian online travel company, EaseMyTrip, took to social media, specifically Twitter. In his statement, he announced, “In solidarity with our nation, @EaseMyTrip has suspended all Maldives flight bookings.” This public declaration reinforces the company’s support for India and its decision to suspend services related to Maldives in response to the derogatory remarks made by certain ministers.

On January 4, Prashant Pitti, one of the co-founders, expressed his enthusiasm for the pristine beauty of Lakshadweep. In his post, he stated, “Water & beaches of Lakshadweep are as good as Maldives/Seychelles. We at @EaseMyTrip will come up with crazy special-offers to promote this pristine destination that our PM @narendramodi has recently visited!” This signals the company’s commitment to supporting and promoting Lakshadweep as a desirable tourist destination, especially in light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the region.

Amidst the ongoing tension between India and the Maldives, the hashtag #BoycottMaldives gained popularity on social media, leading to reports of Indian tourists canceling their planned vacations to the island nation.

The controversy was fueled by the suspension of three Maldivian deputy ministers by the government on Sunday. These ministers faced backlash for posting derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Modi on social media. In response, India strongly raised the issue with the Maldivian government. The controversy escalated further as top opposition leaders in the island nation criticized the ruling establishment over the matter.

The suspended deputy ministers, Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid from the youth ministry, were reported to have criticized Modi for his posts on a certain platform (referred to as ‘X’), suggesting that it was an attempt to promote Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist destination to the Maldives.

The situation unfolded concurrently with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s week-long visit to China, adding a geopolitical dimension to the controversy. The developments highlight the impact of social media in shaping public opinion and the interconnected nature of political and diplomatic events in the digital age.
