An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck Bangladesh on Friday morning, with tremors felt across several districts in West Bengal, including Kolkata, Malda, Nadia, and Cooch Behar.
Tremors Felt in Kolkata
In Kolkata, residents reported feeling the tremors around 10:10 am for a few seconds. Many described the shake as brief but noticeable, causing fans, furniture, and even sofas to move slightly. Social media users in the city shared that the tremors felt “powerful” despite lasting only a few seconds.
Impact Across West Bengal
Apart from Kolkata, tremors were reported in Dakshin and Uttar Dinajpur, Cooch Behar, and other districts. Residents described the shaking as mild, and so far, no damage, casualties, or injuries have been reported.
Epicentre and Other Affected Areas
According to the USGS, the earthquake’s epicentre was in Narsingdi, about 50 km from Dhaka, Bangladesh, at a depth of 10 km. Tremors were also felt in Guwahati, Agartala, and Shillong. The ongoing Test match between Bangladesh and Ireland in Dhaka was briefly disrupted, but the game resumed after a few minutes without any reported damage.
