Dwarka Expressway: How The 5.1 Km Tunnel Will Cut Travel Time Between IGI Airport And Gurugram

Trial runs have begun on the tunnel of the Dwarka Expressway. This tunnel is a relief for the passengers of Delhi-NCR as it connects Gurugram directly to the Delhi Airport.

There are several projects proposed to boost connectivity in the Delhi and NCR region. One such project is the Dwarka Expressway Project, which will link Delhi to Gurugram. This project includes two tunnels. Once these tunnels are open to the public, they will help solve the traffic-related issues faced by commuters.

Trial runs have begun on the tunnel of the Dwarka Expressway. This tunnel is a relief for the passengers of Delhi-NCR as it connects Gurugram directly to the Delhi Airport. Officials said that this tunnel is strategically built between Gurugram and Delhi. Apart from this, a series of underpasses built along this route will make it easier for passengers in Gurugram to reach Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) directly.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said that this special location and design of the tunnel will be beneficial for daily commuters, which will reduce the pressure on surface roads, and traffic jams will also be reduced due to connectivity to IGI Airport via Dwarka Expressway.

The underpass opened for the trail runs includes a shallow tunnel, which connects Delhi’s Dwarka to the Indira Gandhi International Airport through the airport underpass and also provides a return route. Along with this, people can also go from Dwarka to Gurugram (towards Sirhaul) via the shallow tunnel and right turn underpass. Apart from this, the airport underpass and right turn underpass can be used jointly to go from Terminal 3 to Gurugram (towards Sirhaul), it also stated in the official statement.

Apart from connectivity to the airport, the Delhi portion of the Dwarka Expressway will ease travel between major areas like Gurugram, Vasant Kunj, Dwarka, and Alipur. Also, this tunnel will provide connectivity to other main routes of Delhi-NCR.

The expressway has a 5.1 km long tunnel. The tunnel has been constructed in two segments. The length of one tunnel is 3.6 Km, and the length of the other tunnel is 1.5 km.

At present, trial runs are going on this 2.5 km long tunnel in the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway, which will be there from 12 noon to 3 pm. While the Gurugram portion was opened last year, now the Delhi section is also fully ready, including the tunnel. This Rs 9,000 crore Dwarka Expressway project includes 18.9 km of road in Gurugram and 10.1 km in Delhi, with a total of 23 km of elevated road and a 4 km long tunnel, which goes from Shiv Murti to IGI Airport.
