The police encounter of Mangesh Yadav who reportedly looted a jewellery showroom with others in Sultanpur on August 28 has stirred political controversy after DSP DK Shahi, the officer who led this operation on September 5 was seen in floaters in a viral video. The main accused in the same case of robbery in broad daylight, Vipin Singh, surrendered in Rae Bareli and is alive.
Akhilesh Yadav questions Mangesh encounter
Speaking on the incident, former CM of UP Akhilesh Yadav has not only raised concern about the police encounter but has also questioned this ‘bias’ against one of the perpetrators. On the other hand, a recent speech of DSP DK Shahi has gone viral in which he can be seen saying that those who deserve to be in jail, have been jailed. Those who fire on the police have been dealt with in the same manner.
DK Shahi started as a sub-inspector
DK Shahi has not become an overnight sensation but has always been the government’s trusted name among the UP Police. Started his career as a sub-inspector from the Gonda district in 2001, DK Shahi’s full name is Dharmesh Kumar Shahi and he hails from the Deoria district of eastern UP, commonly known as Purvanchal.
Soon after joining, he became active in police encounters in 2005 and within a few years was labelled as an encounter specialist among the cops.
Promotions and awards by govt
Born in 1974, Shahi pursued his MA from the University of Allahabad and LLB from Lucknow University and has been given two out-of-turn promotions in his tenure to date. The first promotion was granted to him by the BSP govt led by Mayawati in the year 2010 whereas the second was given by the Yogi govt in 2018. He has been awarded by the President of India twice for his exemplary performance during his duty. In 2019, he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police.

His wife Ritu Shahi is a BJP leader and a member of the Uttar Pradesh Women Commission. Notably, she had assumed this role before the Mangesh Yadav encounter.
