A speeding car drove into a crowd at a busy market in South Kolkata on Sunday morning. One person died, and six others were seriously injured.
Police said that a TV serial director and an executive producer from a well-known Bengali entertainment channel were inside the car when the accident happened.
After the crash, angry locals stopped the car and beat up both people inside before handing them over to the police. When officers arrived to control the situation, one of the passengers, Shriya Basu, seemed drunk and collapsed on the road.
TV Director Arrested After Drunk Driving Crash in Kolkata Market
At the time of the accident, Siddhanta Das, also known as Vikto, a well known director in the Bengali film industry was driving the car. He was later arrested by the Kolkata Police.
Shriya Basu, an executive producer who was with him, was rescued from the angry crowd by police and handed over to her family.
Sources confirmed that both were drunk during the incident.
According to a report by India Today, the two had been out partying late the night before. They were celebrating the success of their TV show at a pub in South City Mall. While the rest of their group left around 2 a.m., Siddhanta and Shriya kept drinking and drove around the city all night.
On Sunday morning, their car entered Thakurpukur Bazar and started hitting people walking on the road. An eyewitness said, “The car came from the Bishnupur side. After the crash, we saw only one person inside the car.”

A Kolkata Police officer said, “Around 9:30 in the morning near Thakurpukur Bazar on Diamond Harbour Road, a private car hit several people walking on the road. Six people were injured. Four of them were taken to Kasturi Nursing Home, and two were sent to CMRI Hospital in serious condition. The police have taken the car and caught the driver. The investigation is ongoing.”
All the injured people are being treated at the hospital. One of them, Aminur Rahman, a sweeper with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and a local CPI(M) leader- died in the accident.
The accused, Siddhanta Das, is expected to be presented in court today.
