Rajendra Prasad 138 birth anniversary: Dr. Rajendra Prasad was India’s first president from 1950 to 1962. He was born in a Kayastha family in the Siwan district of Bihar. He was also a journalist, scholar, well-known lawyer, activist and philosopher. As a member of the Indian National Congress during the Indian Independence Movement, he played an important role for Bihar and Maharashtra.

  • Dr. Rajendra Prasad worked as an English professor at a college in Bihar before going into law.
  • The father of Dr. Rajendra Prasad hired a Maulavi to teach him Persian.
  • In 1917, Mahatma Gandhi chose Dr Rajendra Prasad to help in a campaign to improve the plight of Bihar’s peasants, who were being oppressed by British indigo planters.
  • He is the only Indian President to be re-elected twice in a row, in 1952 and 1957.
  • In 1962, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.
  • In 1906, he was instrumental in the formation of the Bihari Students Conference in Patna College Hall.
  • He wrote his autobiography while imprisoned in Bankipur Jail for three years.
  • Prasad was imprisoned several times by British authorities for his involvement in and support of the Satyagraha Movement and the Quit India Movement.
  • Following India’s independence, Prasad presided over the Constituent Assembly, which drafted the country’s constitution. He was critical in shaping the country’s post-independence development.
  • Dr Rajendra Prasad died at the age of 78 on February 28, 1963.
