Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec, who secured a silver medal in the 10m air pistol event at the Paris Olympics 2024, went viral for his unconventional ‘gearless’ appearance. His relaxed attitude, opting not to use protective earplugs or special lenses, made him a social media sensation. Yusuf Dikec sported regular glasses and a team T-shirt, with his left hand casually into his pants pocket.
After he won the medal, several rumors began circulating. One claimed that the 51-year-old took up shooting after a tumultuous divorce. Some social media users also suggested that Dikec was a mechanic who turned to shooting following his difficult divorce.
A Facebook page published a post claiming to explain his background, portraying him as a mechanic who took up shooting after a rocky divorce. The post also asserted that Dikec took a jibe at his former spouse while receiving his silver medal.
However, the narrative was entirely satirical and false. According to a report, Dikec began competitive shooting in 2001 after joining the Gendarmerie General Command as a non-commissioned officer. He is a four-time Olympian, having competed in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020.

In an interview with Turkish broadcaster , Dikec discussed his unique shooting technique, describing it as one of the “rare shooting techniques in the world.” He noted that even referees are surprised by his practice of shooting with both eyes open.
He also mentioned that a medal was anticipated given their rigorous training. “This year we prepared a lot and worked hard… this success belongs to all of Turkey,” he said. Looking ahead, Dikec and his teammate Sevval Ilayda Tarhan are eager to compete in the Los Angeles Summer Games in 2028.
