Delhi’s ‘No Fuel For Old Vehicles’ Rule To Roll Out Soon; Fuel Stations Install Scanners

Delhi is set to implement a 'no fuel for old vehicles' policy, aiming to reduce air pollution by denying fuel to petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years.

A total of 477 fuel stations in Delhi operated age-check detection systems which stood only short of 23 additional units from enforcing the ‘no fuel for overage vehicles’ program as part of air pollution mitigation. A senior environment department official informed PTI that all remaining stations among the 477 refilling stations will acquire the device within 10 to 15 days following the current installation of 372 petrol stations and 105 CNG stations.

Launch Delayed Due To Incomplete Installation

According to official statements the government plans to activate the system during April. The Delhi government chose to delay the policy implementation which was scheduled for April 1 because all necessary devices were not installed throughout the city. The installation process for the devices reaches 477 fuel refilling stations while still connecting 23 additional stations. Rekha Gupta serves as Chief Minister while Manjinder Singh Sirsa functions as Environment Minister as they lead the process surveillance.

Full Implementation Expected By Month-End

The environmental department official indicated that a complete implementation will be finished by the conclusion of this month. The governmental plans from March stated fuel stations throughout Delhi would bar the sale of petrol and diesel to vehicles older than 15 years for gasoline and 10 years for diesel. The city maintains 500 fuel stations where drivers can refill their vehicles.

Goal: Reduced Pollution Through Fuel Sale Restrictions

This restriction aims at controlling automobile exhaust and limiting pollution in the city which affects local residents continuously. Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras were being installed throughout fuel stations by the government to enforce their ‘no fuel for overage vehicles’ policy through vehicle registration date identification.

Camera System To Enforce Compliance

The cameras can verify the validity of pollution under control certificates which vehicles need. Fuel filling operations at petrol stations will be blocked when overage vehicles or those non-compliant with pollution norms cause alerts for petrol pump attendants.

City-Wide Enforcement Without Exceptions

The planned enforcement system aims to achieve complete implementation through all measures. Our goal is full enforcement which will not set boundaries between operational stations and others. Sirsa stated that the city-wide launch of this initiative will begin only after every service station receives the necessary equipment. The government stands in compliance with a 2018 Supreme Court ban that prohibits diesel vehicles beyond their tenth anniversary and petrol vehicles beyond their fifteenth anniversary in Delhi.

Older Vehicles Face Strict Parking And Registration Rules

Public areas are restricted to vehicle parking according to a 2014 National Green Tribunal order that applies to cars exceeding 15 years of age. The Delhi government through its 2024 guidelines determined that end-of-life vehicles would receive impoundment release only when owners relocated vehicles to private spaces or obtained state registration approvals for transfer outside Delhi.
