Delhi’s oldest indoor facility, the Talkatora Stadium, is expected to be renamed soon. BJP MLA Parvesh Verma on Tuesday announced his plans to put forward a proposal for a new name in the next New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) meeting. Shortly after taking oath as an NDMC member, the BJP MLA from New Delhi assembly constituency said, “We will highlight the renaming proposal for Talkatora Stadium in the next NDMC meeting.
New Name Of Talkatora Stadium
The BJP MLA earlier stressed that the Talkatora stadium is very popular, and many big events are organized here. Tourists visit this stadium from all over the world, so its name should be changed, he added. He further highlighted that the Valmiki community has put forward a proposal, and shortly after February 8, in NDMC’s first meeting, it will be renamed to Bhagwan Maharishi Valmiki Stadium.
About Talkatora Stadium
The Talkatora Stadium was built back in the year 1974. It derives its name from the Mughal-era garden next to it. The word ‘Talkatora’ is a combination of two Persian words: Tal (Tank) and Katora (Bowl-shaped depression). According to historian Sohail Hashmi, there is still an embarkment inside the garden that was used to collect water that ran down several streams of the Southern Ridge. Firoz Shah Tughlaq built it, possibly. The stadium has a seating capacity of 2,700 today, and it regularly hosts political, sporting, and cultural events.
NDMC Procedures For Name-Change Request
A name-change request under the NDMC procedures requires the documents to be submitted to the General Administration Department. A 13-member council then either approves or rejects the proposal. After being passed, the Delhi Govt’s Urban Development Department clears it. Many famous places, stadiums, and other places have already been renamed under the BJP government in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
