Delhi-NCR Turns Dark As Heavy Rain Lashes; IMD Issues Red And Orange Alerts Across India-Check Full Forecast

The entire country is receiving widespread rainfall, from north to south and east to west. After a wet August, September is also expected to be wetter than usual.

Heavy rain lashed Delhi-NCR on Monday evening, plunging the city into darkness afterward. The monsoon is currently active in most parts of the country including the national capital. Heavy showers brought the city to a standstill, with slow-moving traffic, waterlogging and stranded commuters taking shelter under footbridges.

IMD Issues Red And Orange Alerts Across India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple alerts for heavy rainfall across the country for September 1. A red alert is in place for northern states like Uttarakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Western Uttar Pradesh, while an orange alert has been issued for Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh and Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Half of the country is placed under yellow alert, which includes states like Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Assam, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Goa and others.

Heavy Rainfall Alert In These States

According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall spell is likely to continue over Northwest India during next 3 days with isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh on Monday. Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan, Assam, Gujarat, Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh will receive heavy rainfall.

In southern peninsular India, coastal Andhra Pradesh and coastal Karnataka will experience heavy showers. In eastern India, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to receive heavy rainfall today.

Furthermore, the IMD has forecast thunderstorm accompanied by lightning over Assam, Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sub Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand for Monday.

The monsoon trough currently passes through Ganganagar, Pilani, Datia, Satna, Daltonganj, Digha and towards east-southeastwards to northeast Bay of Bengal. Other than the monsoon trough, other systems influencing the weather in India are western disturbance and upper air cyclonic circulation over northwest Madhya Pradesh, northeast Rajasthan, South Uttar Pradesh.

Forecast For September

Earlier on Sunday, the IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra stated that monthly average rainfall over the country as a whole in September is most likely to be above normal, forecasting wetter-than-usual conditions.

He explained that while most regions are expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall, some areas particularly parts of northeast and east India, sections of the extreme southern peninsula, and a few pockets in northwest India may experience below-normal showers.

Residents Advised Caution

In view of the extreme weather conditions and alerts in place, residents are advised to remain cautious. The following precautionary measures are recommended: Check for traffic congestion on your route before leaving for your destination. Follow any traffic advisories that are issued in this regard. Avoid going to areas that face the water logging problems often. Avoid staying in vulnerable structure.
