Delhi schools will not remain fully closed on December 15. Instead, the Delhi government has directed schools to function in hybrid mode due to worsening air pollution levels in the national capital.
Delhi Schools to Operate in Hybrid Mode
The Directorate of Education (DoE) has instructed schools to immediately shift to hybrid classes for students of Classes 1 to 9 and Class 11. The move aims to reduce children’s exposure to hazardous air while maintaining academic continuity.
This directive applies to government schools, private schools, government-aid schools, school runs under MCD and NDMC and also Delhi Cantonment Board.
As per the official notice, students and their guardians can choose online classes wherever the facility is available. Schools have been asked to provide flexibility until further instructions are issued.
GRAP Stage-IV Measures Implemented
The decision comes after the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) enforced Stage-IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) with immediate effect. The strict measures were introduced to prevent further deterioration of air quality across Delhi-NCR.
Delhi Records Worst Air Quality of the Year
Delhi recorded its worst air quality of the year, with the 24-hour average AQI reaching 431, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). This crossed the previous high of 428 recorded on November 11. Forecasts suggest AQI levels may continue in the ‘severe’ category, posing serious health risks.
Work-from-Home Rules for Offices
Along with school restrictions, the Delhi government has also ordered government and private offices to limit physical attendance:
- Maximum 50% staff allowed in offices
- Remaining employees to work from home
- Senior officials may call staff if required for essential and emergency services
