Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta faces her first major political test as counting begins for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) bypolls. The outcome will either strengthen her image and support for her “Viksit Delhi” vision or signal early public dissatisfaction with civic issues.
Why were elections held in only 12 wards?
The bypolls were conducted across 12 wards on November 30, with a voter turnout of 38.51%. These elections were necessary because 12 seats became vacant — 11 councillors went on to win seats in the Delhi Assembly, and one was elected to Parliament. One of these vacancies includes Rekha Gupta’s own seat from the Shalimar Bagh-B ward. Among all wards, Chandni Mahal recorded the highest turnout at 55.93%, while Greater Kailash had the lowest at 26.76%.
Polling for the MCD by-elections was held on November 30 across 580 booths to fill 12 vacant seats. These vacancies arose after 11 councillors were elected to the Delhi Assembly and one to Parliament. The Shalimar Bagh-B ward was among them, vacated by CM Rekha Gupta herself.
Voter turnout differed across wards, with Chandni Mahal recording the highest at 55.93%, and Greater Kailash the lowest at 26.76%. The overall turnout stood at 38.51%, showing moderate public participation.
Congress leader Suresh Choudhary has emerged victorious in the MCD bypoll from Ward No. 163, Sangam Vihar. He attributed his win to the support of local residents, saying, “This victory belongs to the people of Sangam Vihar. Many BJP leaders, including the CM, visited the area, but they did not seek votes based on their work, and it did not help them.”
Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra lauded the BJP for its impressive performance in the MCD bypolls, describing the outcome as a “splendid victory.” “Corrupt and lying Kejriwal gang has been wiped out,” noting that even traditional AAP strongholds like Chandni Chowk and Chandni Mahal delivered decisive defeats to the party," he said in a post on X.
As the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) bypoll results come in, BJP has demonstrated its strength by retaining Chandni Chowk and Shalimar Bagh B wards, while Congress has secured a win in Sangam Vihar. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Anita Jain has won the Shalimar Bagh B ward in the high-profile MCD by-elections, defeating AAP’s Babita Rana Ahlawat by a margin of 10,101 votes.
BJP’s Sumar Kumar Gupta, the winner of the Chandni Chowk MCD bypoll, said he will focus on addressing issues related to sewer systems, traffic congestion, electricity, and water supply. “The CM had promised to give Rs 100 crore fund for Chandni Chowk, and we will use this fund properly for the development of the area, and restore Chandni Chowk’s pride,” he said.

BJP candidate Sarala Chaudhari has won the Vinod Nagar ward with 10,717 votes, defeating AAP’s Geeta Rawat by a margin of 8,948 votes.
AAP’s Rajan Arora has emerged victorious in Naraina, securing 10,423 votes and narrowly defeating BJP’s Chandrakanta Shivani by 148 votes.
BJP candidate Sarala Chaudhari has secured victory in Vinod Nagar, garnering 10,717 votes and defeating AAP’s Geeta Rawat by a margin of 8,948 votes.
BJP candidate Rekha Rani has won the Dichaon Kalan ward with 15,282 votes, defeating AAP’s Neetu by a margin of 5,637 votes.
All India Forward Bloc candidate Mohd Imran has emerged victorious in Chandni Mahal, the ward with the highest voter turnout in these MCD bypolls. The result is seen as a significant setback for the BJP.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Anil has emerged victorious in the Mundka ward during the Delhi civic body bypolls.
In the 250-member MCD House, BJP currently holds 116 seats, AAP 99, Indraprastha Vikas Party 15, and Congress 8. For BJP, these bypolls represent their first major electoral test since their Assembly win, while AAP and Congress are looking to regain lost ground in Delhi.
Although the bypoll outcomes will not impact the stability of Chief Minister Gupta’s government, they are expected to shape public perception and influence inter-party dynamics ahead of the next full MCD elections in 2027.
Congress’ Suresh Choudhary has won the Sangam Vihar-A ward in the Delhi civic body, securing 9,138 votes, while BJP’s Subhrajeet Gautam trailed by 3,628 votes.
BJP’s Anita Jain has emerged victorious in the Shalimar Bagh ward, securing 6,742 votes, according to the State Election Commission.
BJP is currently leading in six of the 12 MCD wards—Shalimar Bagh, Dwarka, Greater Kailash, Mundka, Vinod Nagar, Ashok Vihar, and Dichaon Kalan—demonstrating strong early momentum in the bypolls.
