With the election campaign coming to an end and only a few hours left for polling, all eyes are set on how the women vote for Delhi Assembly Elections 2025. Constituting 45% of the electorate, women make up an important segment of Delhi voters, that every political party wants to woo.
Aam Aadmi Party has successfully impressed Delhi women and its convenor Arvind Kejriwal has established himself as a champion of their cause, the claim its arch-rival the BJP has always contested. It is evident by the fact that the ruling party won as many as eight seats in 2020.
The importance of woman voters can be gauged by the fact that no sooner did the Delhi Election approach, all political parties began attempts to reach out to them and announce programmes and schemes to attract them.
Parties Compete To Woo Delhi Women
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi was the first to announce that Rs 1,000 would be given to every eligible woman in Delhi under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana. AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal assured the women to increase this amount to Rs 2,100 if his party is elected for the third term.
The BJP upped the ante by declaring that it would pay Rs 2,500 to every woman every month under the Mahila Samridhi Yojana, besides Rs 21,000 will be given to every pregnant woman.
Congress too joined the bandwagon of freebies for women by declaring similar largesse under the Pyari Didi Yojana. It also announced to revive Ladli scheme to support girls’ education and financial security.
The Congress and the BJP also announced 33% reservation for women in state government jobs. The grand old party also announced, “shagun” (wedding assistance), a scheme under which Rs 1.1 lakh would be given to orphan girls, widows’ daughters, and economically disadvantaged women graduates.
How Many Women In Delhi Elections 2025?
Out of 699 candidates fighting the Delhi Elections 2025, 94 are women. It is the highest number of women candidates for the Delhi Election, but still less than the 33% benchmark. While the saffron party has fielded nine candidates, the grand old party has given tickets to seven women and the AAP has fielded nine woman candidates.
None of the parties have distributed one-third or 33% of the tickets to women as required, though they have come out with hammer and tongs to woo the women voters.
The BJP allotted tickets to eight women in 2015 and six in 2020, though none could win. The AAP gave tickets to nine women, eight of them won the election in 2020. On the other hand, Congress fielded 10 women in 2020, none could win the polls.
As the campaign for Delhi Assembly Elections 2025 came to an end, Arvind Kejriwal urged the women to convince the male members of the family to vote for the ruling party.
He took to social media X to write in a post, “I appeal to my mothers and sisters to convince the male members of their families that there is nothing in the BJP. It is the party of the rich. Only Kejriwal will be useful…”
He claimed that the AAP would win 55 seats, but if the women go out to vote in full force and persuade the men in their families to vote for the AAP as well, the party could win more than 60 seats in the 70-member Delhi assembly.
The women of Delhi would soon give their verdict.
