In a significant political shift, veteran Congress leader Mateen Ahmed joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday, ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, which are expected to take place in February 2025. Ahmed, a prominent figure in Delhi’s Seelampur constituency, is a five-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) who served in the Delhi Assembly from 1993 to 2013 and has built a strong political presence in the region.

AAP Welcomes Mateen Ahmed into the Fold
The announcement of Ahmed’s induction into AAP was made by party convener and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Welcoming him, Kejriwal stated, “Today, Mateen Sahab has joined the right party. Better late than never. Chowdhary Sahab is a prominent figure in Delhi politics. Like AAP, he has earned respect in his area for his efforts.” The move signals a further strengthening of AAP’s position in Seelampur, a constituency it has won in both the 2015 and 2020 Delhi Assembly elections.
Family Ties: Zubair Ahmed and Shagufta Choudhry Also Join AAP
In a related development, Ahmed’s son, Chaudhry Zubair Ahmed, and his wife, Shagufta Choudhry, a Congress Councillor, also joined AAP last month, further solidifying the family’s political shift towards the Arvind Kejriwal-led party. Speculation is growing that Zubair Ahmed may be fielded by AAP as the candidate from Seelampur in the upcoming elections, continuing the family’s longstanding political association with the region.
Mateen Ahmed’s Political Legacy
From 1993 to 2013, Mateen Ahmed contested and won the Seelampur seat multiple times, under various political affiliations, including Janata Dal, as an independent, and with the Congress. His consistent success in the constituency has made him a key player in Delhi politics, and his switch to AAP is expected to further boost the party’s prospects in Seelampur.
With AAP having won the Seelampur seat in both the 2015 and 2020 elections, the party looks to continue its momentum as the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections approach.
