Delhi Car Blast: NIA confirms vehicle-borne IED used by Dr Umar, expands multi-state investigation

In a statement, the NIA said its investigations revealed that the accused, a resident of Samboora had conspired with the alleged suicide bomber, Umar Un Nabi, to unleash the terror attack.

Delhi Car Blast: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday confirmed that the explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station which killed at least 10 people and injured several others was a suicide attack. According to the agency, the blast was carried out using a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (IED) driven by Dr Umar un Nabi.

During the investigation into the Delhi terror attack, the NIA on November 16, arrested Amir Rashid Ali, a resident of Samboora, Pampore in Jammu and Kashmir. He is accused of conspiring with suicide bomber Nabi to carry out the attack. Ali, in whose name the car used in the attack was registered, was arrested from Delhi by the NIA. Notably, the agency had launched a massive search operation after taking over the case from Delhi Police a day after the blast that occurred around 7 pm on November 10.

Delhi Car blast: Ali conspired with Dr Nabi

In a statement, the NIA said its investigations revealed that the accused, a resident of Samboora had conspired with the alleged suicide bomber, Umar Un Nabi, to unleash the terror attack. Ali had come to Delhi to facilitate the purchase of the car which was eventually used as a vehicle-borne IED to trigger the blast. Additionally, NIA has forensically established the identity of the deceased driver of the vehicle borne IED as Umar Un Nabi, a resident of Pulwama district and Assistant Professor in General Medicine Department in Al Falah University at Faridabad.

NIA expands multi-state investigation

The anti-terror agency has also seized another vehicle owned by Nabi, which is now being examined for potential evidence. So far, the NIA has questioned 73 witnesses, including several individuals injured in the November 10 blast that shook the national capital. Working in close coordination with Delhi Police, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Haryana Police, Uttar Pradesh Police, and other partner agencies, the NIA stated that its investigation is continuing across multiple states.
