Days after the incident, police arrested two men involved in the theft of an ATM from a kiosk in Wazirabad, North Delhi. The stolen ATM was recovered from an abandoned well in Nuh, Haryana.
The arrested culprits were identified as Nadeem Khan, 28, and Sameer Sheikh, 27. At least four more individuals involved in the crime are still absconding.
According to the police, the ATM, installed by a private sector bank in Wazirabad, was stolen on February 6, containing around ₹29 lakh.
“The thieves seemed to have meticulously planned their operation, including spraying black paint on the security camera lens of the ATM. They uprooted the machine using heavy tools, loaded it into a vehicle, and managed to escape with more than ₹29 lakh,” said Surender Singh, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).
Investigating teams deployed multiple informers in the case. One source suggested that a gang based in Nuh was involved.
“Based on this information, we developed sources in Nuh. We learned the accused were frequently changing their locations. Our team spent three days searching about 15-20 villages around Nuh for the suspects,” Singh said. On Saturday, investigators discovered the accused were hiding in Nalhad village, near Nuh.
“We zeroed in on the vehicle used as a secondary vehicle during the crime. Eventually, our team managed to apprehend both culprits,” Singh explained. He noted that police seized ₹47,000 in cash from the suspects.
The accused led the police to the ATM, which had been hidden in a well. It was hoisted out using a crane, Singh added. Police are still searching for the other suspects, who remain at large.
Nadeem, a BTech graduate, had a history of criminal activity activity and never pursued a legitimate career. Sameer, a BSc graduate, worked for two years at a cement company in Nuh before turning to crime.
