Torrential rainfall in North Bengal has led to massive landslides in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts, which have led to the death of at least 14 people, and the toll is expected to rise further. The excessive rains led to the collapse of two iron bridges in the Darjeeling district. Multiple roads have been damaged and flooded, and the damage has been further exacerbated as large areas of land have been inundated in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar districts.
Here’s what you should know about the situation
14 dead, several missing
The landslides have claimed 14 lives in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts. Rescue teams, including the NDRF and local police, said two people died in Sarsaly and Jasibirgaon each, while four bodies have been retrieved from Dhar Goan, Mechi. Beyond that, an Indian Express report suggested that 40 people were rescued from debris in Dhar Goan, where extensive mudslides have flattened several houses.
Sikkim cut off from Bengal
The landslides have severely damaged the road infrastructure and, as per recent reports, the National Highways 10 and 717A, the main roads to Sikkim, have been affected as well. Another massive landslide also destroyed the bridge connecting Pulbazar to Thanaline. The alarming rise in the Teesta River, along with the collapse of bridges, has led to a lack of access to Kalimpong.
Travellers have been advised to be cautious and take roads that go through Ghoom.
CM Mamata Banerjee to visit affected regions
Mamata Banerjee will soon be visiting the North on October 6 to assess the situation in the landslide-affected area. She further stated that those affected by the torrential rains should contact NABANNA Disaster Management Control Room at +91 33 2214 3526 and +91 33 2253 5185. The toll-free numbers are 918697981070 and 1070.

The situation in Darjeeling and surrounding areas is being closely monitored in the wake of heavy rains and landslides. We…
The excessive rains often cause landslides as the soil gets heavier and also reduces friction. Since pinpointing and analysing which points are most susceptible to landslides, it’s difficult to prepare for the possibility of landslides.
The tragic loss of lives due to heavy rain and landslides in Darjeeling, West Bengal, is distressing. I express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the success of rescue and relief operations and wish a speedy recovery to those injured.
