Cyclone Shakhti- In view of the approaching cyclone ‘Shakhti’, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone warning for parts of Maharashtra, with moderate to high alerts in effect from October 4 to 7. The warning is released for six districts including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. During the cyclone, the wind speeds are expected to reach 45–55 km/h, with gusts up to 65 km/h, particularly along the North Maharashtra coast until Sunday, October 5.
Moreover, the wind speed is expected to increase depending on the intensity of the cyclone. Sea conditions are expected to remain very rough, particularly along the northern Maharashtra coast, until October 5. Fishermen have been strictly advised to avoid venturing into the sea during this period.
According to IMD’s forecast, heavy to very heavy rain will lash interior parts of Maharashtra, particularly in East Vidarbha and parts of Marathwada, with a possibility of flooding in the low-lying areas of North Konkan. Conditions like intense cloud formation and infiltration of moisture into the atmosphere are expected to trigger heavy rainfall.
The Maharashtra government has also issued instructions for preparation in response to the cyclone ‘Shakti’ warning. District administrations have been directed to activate their disaster management systems, prepare evacuation plans for citizens in coastal and low-lying areas, issue public advisories, advise against sea travel, and maintain safety during heavy rains.
