A low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal and is likely to intensify into a depression around November 24, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system developed from an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the central parts of the Strait of Malacca on Friday, November 21.
“Under the influence of yesterday’s upper-air cyclonic circulation over central parts of Strait of Malacca, a low-pressure area formed over the Strait of Malacca and adjoining South Andaman Sea at 0830 hours IST today, the 22nd November 2025. It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over southeast Bay of Bengal around 24th November 2025. Continuing to move west-northwestwards, it is very likely to intensify further over southwest Bay of Bengal during subsequent 48 hours,” the IMD noted.
Heavy Rainfall Alerts for Southern States
The IMD has issued warnings for heavy rainfall across the southern states. Very heavy showers are expected in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on November 24 and 25. Heavy rainfall is likely in Tamil Nadu from November 22 to 25, in Kerala and Mahe from November 22 to 26, over Lakshadweep on November 22 and 23, and in Rayalaseema on November 22.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also forecast in Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema from November 22 to 24. Meteorologists are monitoring the system closely and will provide updates if it develops into a cyclonic storm.
Kerala, Karnataka Bracing for Rain
Heavy rainfall is expected to continue in Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep until November 26. Coastal Karnataka may also experience showers during this period. Farmers in Odisha have started harvesting nearly mature paddy crops to avoid crop damage due to the anticipated rains.
Andaman and Nicobar on High Alert
Nicobar Island may see very heavy showers of 7–20 cm, while parts of Andaman are expected to receive heavy rainfall of 7–11 cm. Thunderstorms with gusty winds of 40–50 kmph and lightning are likely at one or two places in Andaman and Nicobar on November 24 and 25. Squally winds with speeds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, are also expected over the Andaman Sea.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until November 23. Local authorities have issued a Signal-3 warning at Port Blair Port and urged residents, tourists, and boat operators to remain alert and exercise caution during recreational activities due to the possibility of high waves.
Cyclone May Be Named ‘Senyar’
If the system intensifies into a cyclone, it will be named Senyar, meaning “lion.” The name was proposed by the United Arab Emirates and is next on the North Indian Ocean cyclone list. The IMD has not yet confirmed whether cyclogenesis will occur.
