What is Cyclone Montha?
Cyclone Montha is a strong storm formed in the Bay of Bengal in late October 2025. Though it started as a small weather system, later it developed into a severe cyclone, with the wind speeds of 100–110 kmph and gusts up to 120 kmph. This time, the name of this Cyclone was given by Thailand. ‘Montha’, literally means “fragrant flower” or “beautiful flower” in Thai. Thailand got this opportunity according to the Cyclone naming system managed by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and its regional partners.
The storm has brought heavy rainfall, strong winds, and high sea waves (up to 4.7 meters) to coastal areas. This prompted the evacuations of over 50,000 people in Andhra Pradesh. Not only Andhra the neighbouring states like Odisha, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu have been alerted. The Cyclone is expected to cause flooding. Odisha witnessed a super cyclone in 1999.
Where Will It Make Landfall?
Cyclone Montha is expected to hit the Andhra Pradesh coast on the evening of October 28. It will likely make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada district, though some forecasts place it between Ongole and Kakinada. After hitting land, the cyclone will weaken but still bring heavy rain to areas like Vidarbha in Maharashtra on October 29. As of early October 28, the storm’s center was about 190 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam and moving north-northwest at 15 kmph. The IMD has issued red and orange alerts for 23 districts in Andhra Pradesh, with strong winds, thunderstorms, and rough seas already affecting the coast.
South Central Railway has cancelled several trains scheduled for 28 and 29 October 2025. The cancellations include services on key routes such as,
Vijayawada–Bhimavaram
Machilipatnam–Vijayawada
Rajahmundry–Visakhapatnam
