Cyclone Montha Approaches Bay of Bengal, Set to Intensify by Oct 27; Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu on High Alert

Cyclone Montha: Following the intensification of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which has now developed into a depression, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of further strengthening into a cyclonic storm by October 27-28. If the storm forms, it may be named “Montha,” a name contributed by Thailand, which means “beautiful flowers.”

Cyclone Montha: Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu on High Alert

In a post on X, the IMD stated, “A depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by October 27.” The storm is expected to impact the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, bringing heavy rainfall. IMD has warned of heavy rainfall in several states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh until October 30. In Tamil Nadu, an orange alert of rainfall has been issued for Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Ranipet districts on October 27.

Cyclone Montha: To Impact Coastal Areas of AP

Speaking to ANI, IMD Scientist Dharma Raju stated that the storm is likely to impact the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, including Machilipatnam, Kalingapatnam, and Kakinada. The entire East Coast, particularly fishermen, has been advised to stay out of the water due to heavy rainfall and strong winds. He mentioned that Telangana is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall over the next two days, with isolated heavy showers predicted in the southern and eastern districts from October 27–29.

Raju further added that a red alert has been issued for the coastal belt and the northern and southern regions of Andhra Pradesh. The state will also experience gusty winds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h over the next five days, accompanied by thunderstorms. In Hyderabad, light to moderate rainfall is expected today and tomorrow, with similar conditions likely to continue over the next five days.

“A low-pressure brewing in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression and is expected to further strengthen into a cyclonic storm by 27–28 October. It is likely to impact the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, including Machilipatnam, Kalingapatnam, and Kakinada,” he stated.
