Following severe flooding in Cuddalore, the district collector has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges. The authorities have not yet specified when schools will reopen, advising students and parents to stay in contact with school officials for the latest updates.
This announcement comes after similar measures were taken in Chengalpattu district, where schools and colleges were closed on Monday, December 2, due to heavy rains.
Disrupted transport:
Meanwhile, Villupuram district in northern Tamil Nadu is grappling with unprecedented flooding caused by torrential rains, which have flooded roads and bridges, disrupted rail and road traffic, and left many passengers stranded. Vast areas of standing crops have also been inundated.
What IMD said:
The heavy rains are a result of the depression left behind by Cyclonic Storm Fengal, which weakened into a Well-Marked Low-Pressure Area on Monday morning, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD said “The depression (Remnant of Cyclonic Storm ‘Fengal’) over north coastal Tamil Nadu & Puducherry moved nearly westwards and weakened into a Well Marked Low-Pressure Area at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 02nd December 2024, over North Interior Tamil Nadu. The remnant low-pressure area is likely to emerge over southeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea off north Kerala-Karnataka coasts around 3rd December 2024.”
