Cyclone Dana is likely to make landfall between Bhitarkanika and Dhamara (Odisha) during mid-night of 24th October. Administration has already carried out operation keeping in view the occurrence and impact of Cyclone Dana. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi led Odisha government is on alert and has made necessary preparations to minimize Cyclone Dana’s impact. India Meteorological Department (IMD) is actively monitoring the movement of Dana and updating through their X. It has predicted extremely heavy rainfall over districts of Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal today due to the weather conditions generated by Cyclone Dana. IMD added that impact of cyclone Dana is expected over Baleswar, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khorda, Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, Cuttack, Dhenkanal districts of Odisha and East and West Medinipur, South and North 24 Parganas, Jhargram, Howrah, Hooghly, Kolkata, and Bankura districts of West Bengal.
What Did IMD Say?
Speaking to ANI, on Cyclone Dana, IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty said that the cyclone has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm last mid-night and is currently moving north-westward with speed of 12km/hr. She said that it will make landfall between midnight today and early morning of 25th October and as a result heavy rain is going to lash the state.
Mohanty said, “It will make landfall between midnight of today to the early morning of the morning of 25 October as a severe cyclonic storm while crossing wind speed will be around 100 to 110 km per hour… In the capital city, heavy rainfall is expected and wind speed will slowly increase and the highest wind speed is likely to occur tonight.”

Fishing Operation Suspended
Bhadrak Assistant fisheries officer, Sandeep Kumar Behera told ANI about the fishing operation which has been banned in the state in view of Cyclone Dana. He said, “In Bhadrak’s jurisdiction there are 911 registered boats, 10 FLC and all the boats have been docked in the landing centre. Fishing has been prohibited till October 26.” He added that fishermen have been warned to not venture into sea.

Balasore Prepares To Tackle Dana’s Impact
Review meetings have been held in districts that are likely to suffer the major impact of Cyclone Dana. District Magistrate, Balasore, Suryawanshi Mayur Vikas told about preparations that have been for the district. He said, “Different level of review meetings took place today…we started shifting people to our cyclone centres…by tomorrow 11 am, our target will be to shift around 2.5 lakh people…we have given instructions to provide all the facilities to the people who are being shifted to cyclone centres…medical equipment and all types of medicines have been kept ready.”
Evacuation Efforts In Progress
Seeing the possible damage that Cyclone Dana could make, evacuation process from vulnerable areas has been started to safeguard the citizens. Bhadrak Collector Dilip Routrai spoke to ANI and said, “We are evacuating the people from vulnerable areas. Some people are coming on their own, while some are being brought by police as they don’t want to leave their homes. 3 NDRF teams are deployed, 1 is stationed at the headquarters 2 are in the field. We have 2 ODRF teams and 4 Fire Department teams are at work.”

Cyclone Shelters
Cyclone shelters have been built in the state and people are brought there ahead of the expected landfall. Gusty winds have started to prevail over Bhadrak. Bhubaneswar Airport has suspended its operations from 5pm today to 9 am on October 25.

Odisha CM Monitors The Preparedness
Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi visited the control room in the office of the Special Relief Commissioner and studied the nature of the storm and its structure. He informed it through X post. “The control room is working 24 hours a day to closely monitor the storm management. Everyone is on high alert to deal with the storm successfully, giving priority to all matters,” said Majhi.
The Chief Minister also chaired the meeting and reviewed the preparedness over Cyclone Dana at the office of Special Relief Commissioner. He further added that government is fully prepared to deal with the storm and all the departments are working in coordination to ensure ‘Zero Casualty’ in the state.
He has also appealed to the people to not panic and follow the information provided by the government.
