Gujarat braces for heavy rains, strong winds as Cyclone Biparjoy arrives; over 74,000 people evacuated to safe place

Cyclone Biparjoy: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest weather bulletin has said that Cyclone Biparjoy will cross Pakistan coasts between Mandvi and Karachi near Saurashtra and Kutch and Jakhau port in Gujarat today.

With the cyclone moving towards the Gujarat coast, parts of the Saurashtra-Kutch region received heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, the Met department said. Rain alert has also been issued for Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka and union territories. The Indian Coast Guard has rapidly deployed ships, rescue teams and helicopters for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in Gujarat.

Meanwhile, over 74,000 people living along the Gujarat coast have been shifted to safer places as a precautionary measure and the state administration has deployed disaster management units for rescue and relief measures. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has earmarked a total of 33 teams to carry out relief and rescue operations in Gujarat and Maharashtra ahead of the likely landfall of Cyclone Biparjoy.

Cyclone Biparjoy:

Cyclone Biporjoy is expected to reach Kutch by this evening. 34,300 people have been shifted to safer places in Kutch, 10,000 in Jamnagar, 9,243 in Morbi, 6,089 in Rajkot, 5,035 in Dwarka, 4,604 in Junagadh, 3,469 in Porbandar.

IMD has warned of heavy rainfall at isolated places over Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka and Jamnagar in Gujarat and heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places over Porbandar, Rajkot, Morbi and Junagadh districts of Gujarat under the influence of Cyclone Biperjoy.

The weather office said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over remaining districts of Saurashtra and north Gujarat region on June 15. Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places very likely over North Gujarat & adjoining South Rajasthan and Southeast Rajasthan & adjoining North Gujarat region on 16th June and heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places on 17th June.

Gujarat’s education department has ordered closure of schools in six coastal districts of the state during the landfall of Cyclone Biparjoy. Schools have been closed for two days in Saurashtra and Kutch regions of Gujarat and Kutch, Porbandar, Amreli along the Pakistan coast. According to reports, the education department has left it to the school administration to declare holiday or continue functioning these days.

At the same time, IMD says that the impact of cyclone Biparjoy is likely to reduce in Maharashtra. Mumbai India Meteorological Department (IMD) chief Sunil Kamble told that the effect of cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ is likely to be less in the Maharashtra region.

Sunil Kamble told that Cyclone Biparjoy is currently away from Mumbai. Biparjoy is likely to make landfall between Mandvi and Karachi on June 15. Heavy rain is likely over Kutch, Saurashtra in the next 24 hours.

Rescue operations

A total of 33 teams have been deployed by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to carry out relief and rescue operations in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Out of these, 18 teams of NDRF have been kept in Gujarat. Of the total 14 NDRF teams in neighboring Maharashtra, five have been deployed in Mumbai while the rest have been kept on standby, officials said. Meanwhile, a senior BJP leader said here that Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Odisha on June 17 has been postponed in view of the possible landfall of Cyclone Biparjoy in Gujarat on Thursday.
