Constitution Day 2022: In independent India, November 26 is a highly special day. This is the date on which the country’s Constituent Assembly formally adopted the current constitution. The fundamental rights guaranteed by the country’s constitution protect our rights by acting as a shield, while the fundamental duties guaranteed by it remind us of our responsibilities. Every year on November 26th, India commemorates Constitution Day. However, the tradition of commemorating Constitution Day on November 26th is very new. The 26th of November was once known as National Law Day.

Here are few unique facts about our constitution:

  • Our constitution is the largest written constitution in the world.
  • It was drafted by B. R. Ambedkar (Chairman of the Drafting Committee) B. N. Rau (Constitutional Advisor to the Constituent Assembly) Surendra Nath Mukherjee (Chief Draftsman of the Constituent Assembly) other members of Constituent Assembly.
  • The original copy of the constitution was not typed, but these copies were written by hand.
  • It took a total of 2 years 11 months 18 days to prepare the Indian Constitution.
  • Prem Narayan Raizada, a distinguished writer, prepared the original copies of the constitution.
  • The original copies of the Constitution are currently kept in the Library of Parliament in a helium-filled box wrapped in flannel cloth with naphthalene balls. Each page is framed in gold leaf, and the first page of each chapter contains artwork.
  • Some important and essential parts of our constitution have been taken from the constitutions of many countries, such as fundamental rights and independent judiciary from the United States, parliamentary system from Britain and the post of President, federal government system from Canada, constitutional amendment system from Africa, fundamental duties from the Soviet Union, emergency provisions from Germany, directive principles of policy from Ireland, and the Republican system of government from the United States.
  • The basic structure of the Indian Constitution is based on the Government of India Act 1935.
