In a letter addressed to BJP national president JP Nadda, the NPP expressed "deep concern" over the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur.

Concerns Over Law and Order

In a letter addressed to BJP national president JP Nadda, the NPP expressed “deep concern” over the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur. The party criticized the state government for its failure to control ethnic violence and restore peace.

“We strongly feel that the Manipur State Government under the leadership of Shri Biren Singh has completely failed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy,” the NPP stated in its letter.

The party further emphasized that the loss of innocent lives and the prolonged crisis compelled them to withdraw support immediately.

Ethnic Strife and Volatile Situation

Manipur has been grappling with ethnic tensions between the Kuki and Meitei communities since May 2023. The situation remains volatile, with recent protests and violence erupting after the discovery of bodies of women and children.

Impact on BJP’s Stability

Despite losing a key ally, the BJP-led government is expected to remain stable. The BJP holds a comfortable majority with 37 seats in the 60-member Manipur Assembly, well above the 31-seat halfway mark.

The BJP’s majority is further bolstered by:

  • Five MLAs from the Naga People’s Front (NPF)
  • One JD(U) legislator
  • Three Independent MLAs

This ensures the government’s stability despite the withdrawal of the NPP’s support.

What Lies Ahead

The withdrawal by the NPP highlights growing dissatisfaction with the handling of the crisis in Manipur. While the BJP maintains its majority, pressure is likely to mount on the state government to address the ongoing violence and restore peace in the region.
