The Congress party released its first list of 39 candidates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Key names include Rahul Gandhi for Wayanad, Bhupesh Baghel for Rajnandgaon, and Shashi Tharoor for Thiruvananthapuram. Other notable candidates include DK Suresh, K Sudhakaran, and KC Venugopal.

The announcement of candidates was made by Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal on Friday, following a meeting of the party’s Central Election Committee (CEC) the day before. The first list did not reveal the party’s candidates from Uttar Pradesh, and it remains uncertain whether Rahul Gandhi will also stand for election in Amethi, his previous stronghold.

In 2004, Rahul Gandhi entered the political arena by contesting from the Amethi constituency, a seat he successfully retained in subsequent elections, winning three times. However, in 2019, he faced defeat at the hands of the BJP’s Smriti Irani in Amethi. Despite this setback, Gandhi secured a seat in the Lok Sabha representing the Wayanad constituency.

From Chhattisgarh, the Congress has nominated former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel to contest from Rajnandgaon, Tamradhwaj Sahu from Mahasamund, Jyotsna Mahant from Korba, and Shivkumar Dehariya from the Janjgir-Champa constituency.

The Congress party has nominated K Muraleedharan to contest from Thrissur in Kerala, KC Venugopal from Alappuzha, and Shashi Tharoor from Thiruvananthapuram.
