This is the first time since the lok sabha 2014 elections that Congress has got the post of Leader of the Opposition, having previously fallen short of the required 10 percent of seats in both 2014 and 2019.
Several senior Congress leaders, including Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, have advocated for Rahul Gandhi to take the position.
