The BJP has alleged that Congress distributed “blank copies of the Constitution” at an event organized by Rahul Gandhi in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Ironically, the event’s theme was about upholding the Constitution. A viral video shared by Maharashtra BJP shows books labeled “Constitution of India” with only the preamble on the first page, followed by blank pages.

Congress Dismisses Claims, Calls it a “Fake Narrative”

Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar countered the BJP’s accusations, clarifying that attendees were provided with notebooks and pens, not blank Constitutions. He accused BJP of spreading misinformation. Congress insisted the event focused on promoting the real essence of the Constitution.

BJP Seizes Opportunity to Criticize Congress

With Maharashtra assembly elections approaching, the BJP seized on the controversy to attack Congress and Rahul Gandhi, labeling the party “anti-reservation” and “anti-Constitution.” Maharashtra BJP tweeted that Congress’s actions symbolized an attempt to erase Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s contributions to the nation. The BJP argued that the Constitution is the “foundation of life for Indians” and called upon voters to reject what it described as Congress’s anti-constitutional agenda.

Red Book Cover Sparks Debate

Another point of contention emerged over the red cover of the Constitution copy Rahul Gandhi held. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis criticized Gandhi, suggesting that the red color indicated an alignment with “urban Naxals and anarchists.” Fadnavis claimed this reinforced earlier accusations about Gandhi’s alleged leanings, asserting that the Congress leader “regularly insults the Constitution.”

Congress Accuses BJP of Undermining the Constitution

In response, the Maharashtra Congress accused the BJP and RSS of being “enemies of the real Constitution.” They argued that the BJP’s strategy aims to dismantle the Constitution by targeting those who defend it. Congress vowed to protect the Constitution under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, accusing BJP of attempting to destroy it through “false accusations.”

Gandhi Reiterates Call for Caste Census

At the event, titled Samvidhan Samman Sammelan, Rahul Gandhi also renewed his call for a nationwide caste census, asserting that his party would work to “break the 50% reservation limit.” He alleged that the BJP and RSS are attempting to stifle the “voice of the country” by attacking the Constitution itself.

A Shift Towards BJP's Aggressive Hindutva Amid Opposition's Leadership Crisis

The Maharashtra election may further push the Congress down as it has lost the election at a time when it needed a win most desperately. Though the Congress succeeded in pushing the BJP to a corner and stopping it at less than a majority on its own, it failed to make any headway further.
