Manipur Violence: The Congress party attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his ‘concern’ for the turmoil in another country when his own country is burning, amidst growing violence in Manipur. Congress on Monday demanded the sacking of Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh over the volatile situation in the northeastern state and the immediate initiation of serious efforts to restore peace in the area. It also asked the SC-appointed probe committee to conduct an expeditious inquiry into the incidents of violence.
Congress Slams PM Modi’s Indifference To Manipur
Congress leaders have sharply criticized PM Modi’s approach to the Manipur crisis. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra termed the indifference of the Prime Minister before the state as ‘unapologetic.’ Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge referred to how former state governor Anusuiya Uikey mentioned that people in Manipur are angry because PM Modi has not visited the state since the violence started. The less attention being given, the deeper the unrest grows, Kharge said.
AICC general secretary K C Venugopal added that the use of rocket launchers in Manipur is a sign that the government has lost control completely. He said, ‘PM Modi pretends as if Manipur is not a part of India. He thinks it’s more important to intervene in the Russia-Ukraine conflict while failing to stop the violence in Manipur.’
Five Killed In Latest Violence In Jiribam District
Fresh violence killed at least five people in Manipur’s Jiribam district on September 7. The violence erupted after suspected Kuki insurgents attacked Nungchappi village, which is about 230 km from the state capital Imphal. According to police reports, one person was shot dead while sleeping, while four others died in an exchange of fire between two warring communities in Jiribam district.
The militants are said to have barged into the house of a solitary living person. In the heavy exchange of fire that followed, four armed persons, including three militants from the hill areas, were killed.
Violence Spreads To Other Districts
There had been reports of at least two incidences of shooting and bombings in the Kakching district. On Friday evening, September 6, one was reportedly killed, and five others injured because of rocket attacks in the Bishnupur district. First Rocket Attack Around 4: 30 a.m., the first rocket attack took place in Tronglaobi, damaging two structures.
Another unguided rocket missile landed at the residence of former Chief Minister Mairembam Koireng in the Moirang town, killing an elderly man and injuring five others, including a 13-year-old girl. Several people have also been injured in another bomb attack in the district.
Anti-Drone Systems Deployed In Manipur By Police
Manipur Police have now equipped themselves with anti-drone systems to deflect the increased violence and prevent further attacks. In addition to that, anti-drone guns and more systems are also in process to add more security in the area.
