The Kashmir Valley is currently experiencing an intense cold wave, with temperatures plunging to unprecedented lows this winter season. The minimum temperature in Srinagar dipped to a chilling -5.6 degrees Celsius, down from -3.4 degrees Celsius the previous night, as officials reported widespread freezing conditions across the region.
In South Kashmir, the towns of Anantnag and Shopian recorded even lower temperatures, plummeting to -8.9 degrees Celsius, while Leh city in Ladakh registered a slightly warmer -8.8 degrees Celsius. The frigid weather has caused water supply lines in various parts of the city and the valley to freeze, impacting residents.
With no significant weather changes expected until December 26, the local Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for cold wave conditions in isolated regions from December 17 to December 23. The warning applies to both Jammu and Kashmir regions, indicating that the biting cold is likely to persist.
Meteorological Director Mukhtar Ahmad forecasted generally dry and cloudy weather over the next three days, with light snow anticipated in higher altitudes on December 21 and 22.
Amid these freezing temperatures, the Drung Waterfall in North Kashmir’s Tangmarg has emerged as a stunning attraction for tourists. Located just a few kilometers from the popular hill station of Gulmarg, the waterfall has transformed into a breathtaking icy spectacle, drawing visitors eager to witness its beauty. Daytime temperatures in the area hover around -4 degrees Celsius, enhancing the allure of this frozen natural wonder.
“This is absolutely stunning; it looks like someone pressed a pause button and froze everything in time. It is like a painting brought to life by nature,” remarked one captivated tourist. The Drung Waterfall, known for its man-made origins, completely freezes during winter, creating a mesmerizing landscape that has become a hot spot for visitors.
Last winter, the Drung Waterfall attracted a significant number of visitors, and this year is expected to see even higher numbers as more people flock to experience its icy beauty.
As Kashmir braces for continued cold wave conditions, residents and tourists alike are reminded to take precautions against the biting cold while enjoying the stunning winter landscape that the region has to offer.
