At least 11 people have lost their lives, and many others are missing after torrential rains battered Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, triggering landslides and cloudbursts in several areas, officials confirmed.
In the Ramban district, a massive cloudburst claimed the lives of at least four people, while four others have been reported missing. Several houses have also been damaged due to the disaster.

Ramban SSP Arun Gupta said, “A heavy rainfall alert had been issued, and last night heavy rainfall occurred. When we received information, our Chowki team activated their informers to know about the exact location… Based on the information we received by 1:30 am, the DC and I decided to come here with our teams and execute the relief and rescue operations. All nallahs on the way were overflowing… 4 bodies have been recovered, and we are working to retrieve the fifth body…”

Meanwhile, a separate incident occurred in Reasi district on Friday morning, where a landslide caused a kutcha house to collapse, killing seven members of a single family. The bodies, including those of five children aged between 4 and 12 years, were recovered from the debris on Saturday morning.

Ramban, located about 136 km from Srinagar, has been receiving heavy rainfall for the past few days. This rain has affected several important roads, including the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44).
Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Sharma told news agency ANI, “Several roads were damaged due to the rain in the past few days. The NH-44 is closed. It might open this evening or by tomorrow morning… In Poonch, there was significant damage due to rainfall…”
According to the IMD, isolated heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Jammu and Kashmir from August 30 to September 2, while light to moderate rainfall is predicted in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Uttarakhand during the next four days.
Earlier on Friday, the Indian Air Force (IAF) intensified its flood relief and rescue operations in Northern India with a primary focus on the severely affected Jammu and Punjab regions, the Ministry of Defence said. Mi-17 and Chinook helicopters have conducted more than 55 sorties to extract stranded civilians, including personnel from the Indian Army and Border Security Force, from inundated areas in Dera Baba Nanak, Pathankot, and Akhnoor sectors. Transport aircraft (C-130) have been deployed to facilitate the rapid movement of specialised NDRF teams into the affected zones, the ministry said.
Further, it said that the “operations have enabled the rescue of 215 individuals and delivered 7,300 kgs of essential relief material in the affected areas in the past three days.”
