New Delhi: Newly-appointed Chief Justice of India (CJI) U.U. Lalit has gone into super fast mode immediately after assuming office. He has made a roster of three hearings a week. The hearing on each case has been reduced to two and a half hours.
Justice Lalit has a tenure of just 74 days as CJI. In such a situation, he plans to hear as many cases as possible in less time.

Fast track hearing, term will end on November 8
Since taking over as the Chief Justice, Justice Lalit has been hearing the matter in the Constitution Bench in a fast-track manner. Four cases are being heard in a constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Lalit.
“I have very little time. Time is short for hearing on these matters,” Justice Lalit said.
Justice Lalit’s term ends on November 8. Not only this, Chief Justice Lalit has constituted a five-judge bench to hear other matters.
A bench headed by the Chief Justice will complete the hearing of all the four cases by the first week of October and then pronounce the verdict. A bench comprising the Chief Justice will hear four cases of the Constitution Bench.

The bench comprising the Chief Justice comprises Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, Justice S Ravindra Bhatt, Justice JB Pardiwala, Justice B Trivedi. The court has agreed to be the first to hear on the economic reservation limit. After this, the bench will hear the matter whether reservation can be given on the basis of religion.
The bench said that it would try to complete the trial of a case within a week (about 7.5 hours). The Bench said that they are short of time. The bench has asked the lawyers to keep their arguments brief and complete them within the time limit. Now the matter will not be heard in the Constitution Bench as before. The hearing will be completed within the time limit.
