A mass murder by a 23-year-old who went on a killing spree across three houses has shocked Kerala. Afan, a resident of Venjaramoodu, Thiruvananthapuram, claimed to have killed six people, including his girlfriend, mother, and teenage brother. However, the police have so far confirmed five deaths. Police confirmed the deaths of the accused’s13-year-old brother Ahasan, grandmother Salma Beevi, paternal uncle Lateef, aunt Shahiha, and his girlfriend Farshana.
Afan’s mother is critical condition and is undergoing treatment. She is currently at Trivandrum Medical College. The police is yet to confirm the motive behind the mass murder.
Shocking Mass Murder
The accused, Afan (23), who surrendered to the police after the Venjaramoodu massacre, claimed to have consumed rat poison. Though the motive behind the murders has yet to be confirmed, he claimed that he have killed six people, including his mother and girlfriend. However, the police have confirmed five deaths, while his mother is currently undergoing treatment.
The police were shocked when Afan stated that he had killed six people. Of the six victims who were stabbed, five were brutally murdered. Since the accused had ingested rat poison, he was immediately shifted to the medical college, delaying a detailed interrogation.
Afan had recently returned from a foreign country. He told the police that he was in financial distress and that the massacre stemmed from a dispute. However, the police remain skeptical of this explanation and are also investigating whether Afan was a drug addict.
Meanwhile, locals say that Afan does not come from a financially troubled family. They also claim to be unaware of any other behavioral issues with him, making the real motive behind the massacre unclear.
During questioning, Afan told the police that his father Rahim’s furniture business abroad had collapsed. He alleged that when he sought financial help from his relatives, they refused, leading him to decide to kill everyone before ending his own life. He also admitted to planning the murder of his girlfriend. Afan has further detailed how each of the victims was killed.
The victims include Afan’s paternal grandmother, Salma Biwi (88); his younger brother, Afsan (13); his girlfriend, Farzana (19); his father’s brother, Latif; and Latif’s wife, Shahida. Afan’s mother, Shami, who was also attacked, is currently in the hospital with serious injuries.
