He is accused of bothering many children many children on a social media app. The man pretended to be a teenager to make friends with the kids. When they did not do what he wanted, he threatened them and tried to blackmail them using child pornography.
Who is Sai Kumar Kurremula?
Sai Kumar Kurremula is a 31-year-old man from India. He was living in Edmond, Oklahoma, on an immigrant visa.
What Happened?
Kurremula has been sentenced to 35 years in prison. This is because he was found guilty of serious crimes involving children. Specifically, he sexually exploited three children and transported child pornography.
Details of the Sentence
- He will spend 35 years, or 420 months, in federal prison. After that, he will be under supervised release, which means he will be closely monitored by authorities when he is allowed to leave prison.
US District Judge Charles Goodwin spoke about the seriousness of Kurremula’s actions. He said that these crimes are very serious because they hurt vulnerable children. The judge noted that the trauma caused by these actions will affect not only the victims but also their families for a long time. The long prison sentence reflects the severity of this trauma.
How Kurremula Was Caught
Kurremula was arrested for serious crimes involving children. In April 2023, he was charged with sexually exploiting minors and transporting child pornography.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) started looking into a social media account in October 2023. This account was being used to exploit young girls. The FBI traced the account’s Internet Protocol (IP) address, which led them to Kurremula.
According to court documents and evidence shown during his sentencing, Kurremula harmed at least 19 young girls on a social media app. He often pretended to be a teenager to gain their trust. When the girls said no to his requests, he would manipulate them, threaten them, and force them to create more child pornography.
Guilty Plea
Kurremula admitted guilt for sexually exploiting three minor victims and for transporting child pornography. He confessed that he threatened his victims by saying he would show explicit images to their parents, harm their families, or post explicit content online.
Severe Punishment for Crimes Against Children
US Attorney Robert J. Troester said that the 35-year prison sentence given to Kurremula was fair because of how serious his crimes were. He added that this case should warn others who harm children that they will face harsh punishments.
FBI’s Strong Condemnation
Doug Goodwater, the FBI Special Agent in Charge in Oklahoma City, strongly criticized Kurremula’s actions. He said that what he did caused “unthinkable harm” to the victims.
Goodwater explained, “This man tricked children into sending him inappropriate pictures for his own sick pleasure. His actions took away the children’s innocence and caused terrible harm.”
