Chhattisgarh: Vinay Kumar Sahu, aspiring to become a civil servant, was apprehended in Durg, Chhattisgarh, after attempting to extort a couple. He broke into their home on June 21 intending to rob them but changed plans upon finding them in an intimate situation. Sahu recorded the incident and threatened to release the video unless they paid him ₹10 lakh.

According to reports, the couple reported the incident to the police. Sahu had used a stolen phone to record the video and send it to the couple via WhatsApp. He was traced by the police as the phone was under surveillance.

According to Crime Branch DSP Hem Prakash Nayak, Sahu had previously robbed the couple’s house in the Ahiwara locality twice before and attempted a third time, believing he could succeed again. An officer mentioned, “He was so lazy that he targeted the same places repeatedly.”

Following his unsuccessful attempts to clear the Public Service Commission (PSC) exams, Sahu turned to burglary and blackmail as criminal activities. An officer mentioned, “He made it easy for us to track him down.”

According to police sources, 28-year-old Sahu had repeatedly failed the PSC exams while striving for a government job. Frustrated by his failures, he resorted to theft, starting with mobile phones from the local vegetable market. However, his criminal activities did not extend beyond minor offenses.

Last Friday, Sahu entered their home with the intention to steal and unexpectedly found the couple in an intimate moment. He recorded a video of them using a stolen smartphone. The following morning, the couple received the video from an unknown number, accompanied by a demand for ₹10 lakh.

Upon reporting the incident to the police and providing the number, a special team tracked Sahu, who was still using the same phone and number. He was apprehended on Wednesday. Police seized three SIM cards and phones from Sahu, ensuring the deletion of the video.
