Interchange Project to Ease Traffic on Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway, Likely To Be Completed by June

Construction work, which began a few months ago, is now progressing rapidly and is scheduled to be completed by next June.

NHAI has begun construction of a trumpet interchange at Sriperumbudur to connect the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway and the Maduravoyal-Walajapet section of the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway. The expressway, which originates in Hoskote, Bengaluru, and ends at the national highway’s toll plaza near Sriperumbudur, will facilitate transportation between the two routes through this interchange. This new structure will facilitate long-distance travel and reduce traffic congestion at the crucial junction.

Work, which began a few months ago, is now progressing rapidly and is scheduled to be completed by next June. This six-lane interchange will be 1.1 kilometers long and will have six arms in three directions. This will provide direct access to motorists heading towards Vellore, Kanchipuram, and Maduravoyal. Additionally, vehicles coming from Kanchipuram and Chennai will be able to access the expressway directly via a flyover. The project is being implemented by the Kancheepuram Project Implementation Unit at a cost of ₹126 crore.

The trumpet interchange will allow motorists to make a U-turn and seamlessly connect to the other carriageway via a single loop ramp in each direction. The trumpet interchange requires less land than the typical cloverleaf design, eliminating the need for additional land acquisition.

NHAI officials explained that this trumpet interchange is being built under the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway. The New Indian Express quoted an official saying, “To ease traffic congestion, a six-lane elevated corridor will start from Sriperumbudur and extend to Maduravoyal, and then another corridor will extend to Chennai Beach. The 23-kilometer stretch between Sriperumbudur and Maduravoyal will be completed in two phases.”

The first phase will be 8.2 kilometers from Maduravoyal to Poonamallee, while the second phase will be from Poonamallee to Sriperumbudur. Over 1.25 lakh vehicles ply on the Chennai-Bengaluru route every day, and the Maduravoyal-Walajapet stretch has high-risk accident black spots.
