Former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala passed away on Friday, at the age of 89. He died at his residence in Gurugram after suffering a cardiac arrest. Chautala was a prominent leader of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and had a significant impact on the political landscape of Haryana.

Om Prakash Chautala was born to Devi Lal, who served as the former Deputy Prime Minister of India.

Devi Lal

Born on 25 September 1914 in Sirsa, Chaudhary Devi Lal, was a politician who served as 6th Deputy Prime Minister of India from 1989 to 1990 and from 1990 to 1991. He emerged as farmer leader from Haryana, and went on to serve as the Chief Minister of Haryana from 1977 to 1979 and from 1987 to 1989. He was the founder of Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and was popularly known as Tau, meaning uncle. He died on April 6, 2001.

He had four sons, Om Prakash Chautala, Ranjit Singh, Pratap Singh and Jagdish Chander and a daughter, Shanti Devi. One of his sons, Jagdish died at a young age, while others joined politics.

Om Prakash Chautala

Devi Lal’s eldest son, Om Prakash Chautala also joined politics and served as the 7th Chief Minister of Haryana. He was born on 1 January 1935. He was the chief minister of Haryana for record four times, from 2 December 1989 to 22 May 1990, from 12 July 1990 to 17 July 1990, again from 22 March 1991 to 6 April 1991 and from 24 July 1999 to 5 March 2005.

He was married to Sneh Lata, who died in August 2019. He has five children, including Abhay Singh Chautala and Ajay Singh Chautala.

Abhay Singh Chautala

Born on 14 February 1963, Abhay is an Indian politician. He was a member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly from Ellenabad. He served as LoP in Haryana Legislative Assembly from 2014 to 2019. He has been elected to the Haryana Legislative Assembly for four terms since 2010. He also served as the 10th president of Indian Olympic Association. He is grandson of Devi Lal and son of OP Chautala.

Ajay Singh Chautala

Born on 13 March 1961, Ajay Singh Chautala is a former MP and sports administrator. He is elder son of Om Prakash Chautala and father of Dushyant Chautala. Ajay became MP, Lok Sabha from Bhiwani in 1999. He then became MP, Rajya Sabha from Haryana in 2004. He later became MLA from Dabwali in 2009. His wife Naina Singh Chautala too became MLA from Dabwali In 2014. Their son Dushyant Chautala was MP, Lok Sabha from Hisar from 2014 to 2019.

Dushyant Chautala

Dushyant Chautala is a great grandson of Devi lal, grandson of OP Chautala and son of Ajay Chautala. Born on 3 April 1988, is an Indian politician who served as the 6th Deputy Chief Minister of Haryana from 2019 to 2024. He is also a former MP in the Lok Sabha from the Hisar constituency. He is the co-founder and president of the Jannayak Janta Party or JJP. He has a younger brother, Digvijay Chautala who is member of JJP.

Arjun Singh Chautala

Arjun is serving as a Member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly from the Rania constituency. He is the son of Abhay Singh Chautala.

Ranjit Singh

Son of Devi lal and brother of OP Chautala, Ranjit Singh Chautala was once considered the political successor of Devi Lal. He served as the Agriculture Minister in his father Devi Lal’s government. As per reports, when Devi Lal had to go to Delhi to become the Deputy Prime Minister, most of the legislators were in support of Ranjit Chautala. However, Devi Lal gave preference to Om Prakash Chautala over him. After this, Ranjit Singh left the Lok Dal and joined the Congress party. He lost the assembly elections twice from the Rania constituency in Sirsa, but in the 2019 assembly elections, he succeeded in becoming an independent MLA.

Pratap Chautala

Pratap Singh Chautala was a former member of Haryana Legislative Assembly. He was son of Chaudhary Devi Lal and younger brother of Om Prakash Chautala. He died on 2014 at the age of 74.

Not all the members of Chautala family are in politics, some come from different fields also. Ranjeet Singh’s son, Gagandeep is a businessman. Pratap Chautala’s sons, Jitendra and Ravi are businessmen.
