He was admitted to Tata Main Hospital in Jamshedpur around 9 PM on Saturday, as confirmed by an official statement. Champai Soren took office as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand on February 2, following the resignation of Hemant Soren, who stepped down due to his arrest in a money laundering case. However, Champai’s tenure was short-lived, as he resigned from the position in July after Hemant was granted bail and reinstated as Chief Minister.

Switch to BJP
On August 30, Champai Soren made headlines by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a ceremony attended by prominent political figures, including Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Jharkhand BJP President Babulal Marandi. He attributed his departure from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) to the party’s “present style of functioning and policies.” Along with resigning from JMM, Soren also stepped down as an MLA and a minister in the Jharkhand Cabinet.

Who is Champai Soren?

At 67, Champai Soren, a tribal leader, is often referred to as ‘Jharkhand’s Tiger’ for his pivotal role in the movement for the creation of a separate state in the 1990s, which ultimately led to the establishment of Jharkhand from the southern part of Bihar in 2000. Soren began his political journey as an Independent MLA after winning a by-election from the Saraikela constituency in undivided Bihar in 1991.

In 1995, he ran for the assembly on a JMM ticket and defeated BJP candidate Panchu Tudu. Although he lost the seat in the 2000 assembly elections to BJP’s Anant Ram Tudu, Soren made a comeback in 2005, winning by a narrow margin of 880 votes. He has successfully secured his seat in subsequent elections in 2009, 2014, and 2019, solidifying his reputation as a significant political figure in Jharkhand.

A Shift Towards BJP's Aggressive Hindutva Amid Opposition's Leadership Crisis

The Maharashtra election may further push the Congress down as it has lost the election at a time when it needed a win most desperately. Though the Congress succeeded in pushing the BJP to a corner and stopping it at less than a majority on its own, it failed to make any headway further.
