New Delhi: The Indian government on Friday withdrew its appeal to celeberate Cow Hug Day on February 14 to lay aside “western” traditions of Valentine’s Day.

It said, “As directed by the Competent Authority and Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying the appeal issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India for celebration of Cow Hug Day on 14th February, 2023 stands withdrawn.”

The Centre on Thursday declared February 14 as Cow Hug Day in an appeal addressed to the nation, which ahs been now taken back. The Centre had asked animal lovers to cuddle up with the cows to embrace them.

In India, cows are considered sacred who holds an important role in the Hindu mythology. The govenment mentioned that the act “will bring emotional richness” and “will increase our individual and collective happiness”.

In the previous appeal, the central governmment cited that the “Vedic traditions are almost on the verge of extinction due to the progress of west [sic] culture over time. The dazzle of western civilization has made our physical culture and heritage almost forgotten.”
