A prominent leader in the Indian National Congress, he held several important ministerial roles, including that of Finance Minister from 2009 to 2012 before his presidential election. In recognition of his significant contributions to the nation, Mukherjee was awarded India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 2019 by his successor, President Ram Nath Kovind.
