Meta:In a recent report, it is being said that social media giant Meta has been slapped with a whopping penalty of Rs 213.14 crore by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in relation to WhatsApp’s privacy policy. Meta has refuted the decision and, in its statement, said it is planning to appeal.
According to reports, CCI has asked WhatsApp not to share user data with other Meta-owned apps, and also not to use it for advertising purposes for a period of five years.
Reasons Behind The Penalty:
CCI has imposed the penalty on the social media giant for malpractices and unfair business practices related to WhatsApp’s privacy policy update, which came into effect in 2021.
The penalty was imposed to curb anti-competitive behavior, and Meta has been asked to implement special remedies to address the issues.
A spokesperson for Meta stated the company’s disagreement with the accusations and confirmed its intention to appeal against the regulator’s decision.
About The Policy Update:
“As a reminder, the 2021 update did not change the privacy of people’s personal messages and was offered as a choice for users at the time. We also ensured no one would have their accounts deleted or lose functionality of the WhatsApp service because of this update,” the Meta spokesperson was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
The spokesperson also informed in his statement that the update was brought in for operational business features on the social media messaging application. The update also provided transparency about data collection and its usage.
