New Delhi: Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Sunday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the decision to rename Chandigarh Airport after freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.

In a tweet, he said that he is grateful to the prime minister for accepting the demand of renaming Mohali airport after Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

This is a befitting tribute to the great freedom fighter who gave his life for the country and is an inspiration to millions of fellow countrymen, Captain said.

During his Mann Ki Baat radio broadcast on Sunday, PM Modi announced that the Chandigarh international airport will be named after freedom fighter Bhagat Singh as a tribute to him.

The announcement comes three days before the martyr’s birth anniversary on September 28. He urged people to celebrate the birth anniversary with fanfare.

“As a tribute to the great freedom fighter, it has been decided that the Chandigarh airport will now be named after Shaheed Bhagat Singh,” PM Modi said.

Punjab chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Bhagwant Mann also thanked Modi for the decision to rename Chandigarh Airport.

“Finally our efforts paid off. On behalf of entire Punjab, we welcome the decision of naming the Chandigarh airport after Shaheed Bhagat Singh ji,” Mann said in a tweet in Punjabi.

Thanking the prime minister, he said, “a long pending demand of Punjabis has got fulfilled”.

Haryana’s Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala also welcomed the announcement.
