New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved a proposal for redevelopment of the New Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus railway stations with an approximate total investment of nearly ₹10,000 Crore.
Addressing a press briefing here, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the design of these stations will be in tune with the cityscape so that it becomes an integral part of the city.
“Cabinet approves the Indian Railways’ proposal for redevelopment of three major railway stations – New Delhi Railway Stn., Ahmedabad Railway Stn. and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Mumbai at an investment of ~Rs 10,000 crore,” he said.

Informing about the integration & redesigning of the station, Vaishnav said: New Delhi railway station will integrate train services with buses, auto & metro rail services. Ahmedabad railway station redesign inspired by Modera’s Sun temple. CSMT’s heritage building won’t be touched but buildings nearby will be re-developed.
The railway minister said the design will include a spacious roof plaza with all passenger amenities in one place along with spaces for retail, cafeterias, and recreational facilities.
Modular technology will be used in the redevelopment of these stations, the minister said, adding that all three stations will be redeveloped in a time span of approximately 2 year to 3.5 years.

As many as 199 stations with a footfall of 50 lakh per day are planned to be redeveloped in the first phase, the railway minister said.
“Tender for the re-development of NDLS, CSMT & Ahmedabad railway stations will be issued in the next 10 days. The total cost of the re-development of 199 stations including these 3 major stations is Rs 60,000 crores,” the railway minister said.
The minister further added that with the progress, the re-development work of stations with 10 lakhs and above will begin in the second phase.
